Copy

One of the things they tell you in art school is to copy from accomplished artists in order to improve. Here are a bunch of copied drawings I did while living in northern Sweden in the winter of 1999. Hmm, let's see-- There's Kirby, Clowes, Segar, Joachim Pirinen, Crumb, Ware, Tenniel, Warren Craghead, Herriman, Gould, and a few Swedish cartoonists and others I don't recognize....

Special Nice Cosmic Hyperdeath

So I have an art show up in April, but the opening is this Friday, April 3rd, 2009, from 8-10 p.m., at Secret Headquarters in Los Angeles. Several new and newish paintings and drawings. Also, I'm printing up very limited quantities of a trio of recent stories as minicomics- "In a Land of Magic," "Cockbone," and (thanks to Secret Headquarters), "Batman." Yes, come.

"Night of the Jibblers"

Here is a stand alone drawing I did in 2007 of the monsters from my story, "Night of the Jibblers." NOTJ is in the new Kramers Ergot, available now from Buenaventura Press.
The above drawing could be called "Jibblers' Night Out." Yes, I know, they're horrible creatures. That's just what Jibblers do.

"Christmas Eve"

This is a very dense, 2-page story I did for Jason Leivian's Diamond Comics #3. If you live in Portland, Oregon, I believe you can pick up copies of this for free around town. Otherwise, ordering information is here.

Anthologizin'

I love a sexy comic anthology. I'm going to have stories in a slew of publications in the late 2008/early 2009. I'll post a couple panels from my strips as well as ordering information as each book becomes available.
And the formats on these titles are going to be all over the map-- From newsprint staple-free tabloid-style, to good ol' fashioned standard comic book size, to book store-friendly "graphic novels", to hyper deluxe skim board-sized art books-- Speaking of which, above are a few panels from my story, "Night of the Jibblers", for Kramers Ergot 7. This book is gonna blow the pants off everything. It won't be out until November, but for now you can pre-order the sucker. And here is an interview with the editor.

Cinefamily

Here is the illustration of Grey Gardens I did for the Silent Movie Theatre's May-June Cinefamily program. Oddly enough, I'd seen the movie for the first time just a couple nights before being asked to do it.

A Bat Hero

I put out a lil' zine version of this comic back in 2007. The cover was a photocopy with red and silver spray paint stencil. I think I printed about 200-250 all told. It was a mega-slog putting those things together, so once those were out, I put it on-line....But now it is no longer available on-line! A slightly altered version of the strip will be printed in the collection The Furry Trap.

Taste of Slice

Robin Bougie has put out a Sleazy Slice second issue, which I think over-all is stronger than the first one. If you like gross, inappropriate, and terrifically uglified comics, you should get you one. I did the back cover drawing, which I think Bougie colored......Stick your thing in the Sewer Hole.

Takin' Care of Business

Usually, I can't abide by killin'. I don't like to kill, but sometimes, a man has to. A man has to take care of business. And sleeping over Wendy's loft, the crickets screech their diddleys on through the night. Upon repeated re-awakening, come 4 a.m., time comes for a man to get on that business. Time for a man to crush it. No need to be a fluster fuck about it though. Cooly, methodically. Walk over to the corner where the noise emits. Discover it's coming from up high, apparently the lil' fellow perched on a beam in the ceiling. Nude. Go and get the ladder. Climb on up, headlight strapped on to the head. Lil' guy leaning over the edge of the beam, probly with a right proper view of the sleeping folks. Making his behavior that much more inexcusable. Try to crush the lil' guy with one's key, but he hops back. Down and looking for something long and thin to get in the crack. Wendy informs she has Raid. Handy, and grabbed. On back up, and spray the shit outta that crack. And with that, no more cricket cries. Again, not something I abide or condone on a general basis. Crickets, usually totally digable. But on this day, I will admit to a certain flush of satisfaction. The noise has ended, and our protagonists can now rest most sleepfully.

Steak and Beer

STEAK & BEER
10 Years of Comics, Paintings, Music and Porn
by Josh Simmons

The Pony Club Gallery is proud to present a retrospective of comics and art from alternative cartoonist and Portland-based artist, Josh Simmons. While comic-centric, the show includes paintings, photography and video ranging from the viciously satirical to the embarrassingly autobiographical to the sickeningly pornographic and to the gut-fuckingly hilarious. Starting 10 years ago with the early, long out of print mini-comics, Lick and Twitch-Happy. Traveling on, to the Top Self publications Cirkus New Orleans and the mini-series Happy, which documents his time performing with a sex circus, the End Of The World Cirkus/Know Nothing Family Zirkus Sideshow. And onto the current horror graphic novella, House, published by the prestigious Fantagraphics Books. Dotted throughout with a smattering of his cartoons-fucking-flesh-people from the ten-issue photo comic, All About Fucking and the bootleg Batman comic, which DC Comics would most likely never care to see the light of day. Drawings and comic pages will hang side by side with other works that reflect the artist's life during his many travels and experiences.

This event also doubles a belated book release party and signing for, House. The artist will be on hand for signing and all 80 pages will be displayed for visual effect.
